Background

​Small Mammal Conservation Organization (SMACON) is a non-governmental organization committed to the protection of small mammals and their habitat through evidence-based conservation that safeguards local livelihoods. We work with local, regional and international partners to deploy SMACON's mission. We are looking for passionate individuals who are dedicated to the documentation and protection of biodiversity in Nigeria, the Gulf of Guinea Islands, and supporting our network of partners across West Africa.

 

​​General Requirements

In addition to the requirements listed for each role, each applicant should possess the following skillset for optimum productivity: email management, knowledge of basic Microsoft tools for word processing, and communication - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and similarly able to work collaboratively in Google Suites e.g. Docs, Sheets; Managing and handling/transferring large files online; familiarity with virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Google Meet).

1) Position: Field Officers /Coordinators (ten positions to be filled)

Location: Calabar

Job Description and Responsibilities​

Supervise Forest Guardians and Data Technicians in Boki

Supervise field-based alternative livelihood teams

Conduct supervised field surveys and

Collect monitoring and evaluation data

Facilitate community engagement and education efforts

Reports to:

Programs Managers

​​

Qualifications and Experience

A degree in Zoology, Biological Sciences, and other related disciplines

Proper business English, punctuation, spelling, and grammatical usage.

Ability to lead a team.

Dynamic and able to quickly learn new skills.

Must reside in Cross River State, and be ready to spend extensive time in the field (Afi Mountain and Cross River National Park)

2) Position: Junior Accountant (one position)

Location: Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.

Salary: ₦300,000 - ₦400,000 (depending on level of experience)

Scope / Responsibilities

Manage monthly reconciliation and reports

Prepare financial annual reports and statements

Ensure prompt entry of financial activities into accounting software

Prepare budgets for grant applications

Ensure SMACON meets donors’ financial reporting expectations  

Ensure that SMACON complies with federal and state financial and tax requirements

Maintain financial security and appropriate expenditure through internal controls

Reconcile financial discrepancies through in-depth analyses of accounts and financial records

Report to the Chief Finance Officer

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum of BSc/BA/HND in Accounting, Management, or related disciplines

ICAN or equivalent certifications will be an added advantage

Must be able to work with QuickBooks

Experience

Must have experience in bookkeeping

Bank and auditor liaison

Relevant post-qualification experience

Prior experience with a non-governmental org. will be an added advantage

​

Skills

Should be fluent in spoken and written English

Analytical, physically organized, and good report-writing skills

Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills

In-depth knowledge of financial systems, financial management, and reporting

Must be a good team player​​
