Background
​Small Mammal Conservation Organization (SMACON) is a non-governmental organization committed to the protection of small mammals and their habitat through evidence-based conservation that safeguards local livelihoods. We work with local, regional, and international partners to deploy SMACON's mission. We are looking for passionate individuals who are dedicated to the documentation and protection of biodiversity in Nigeria, the Gulf of Guinea Islands, and supporting our network of partners across West Africa.
​​General Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed for each role, each applicant should possess the following skillset for optimum productivity: email management, knowledge of basic Microsoft tools for word processing, and communication - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and similarly able to work collaboratively in Google Suites e.g. Docs, Sheets; Managing and handling/transferring large files online; familiarity with virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Google Meet).

1) Position: Field Officers /Coordinators (ten positions to be filled)
Location: Applicants must reside in Calabar

Job Description and Responsibilities​
Supervise Forest Guardians and Data Technicians in Boki
Supervise field-based alternative livelihood teams
Conduct supervised field surveys
Collect monitoring and evaluation data
Facilitate community engagement and education efforts

Qualifications and Experience
A degree in Zoology, Biological Sciences, and other related disciplines
Proper business English, punctuation, spelling, and grammatical usage.
Ability to lead a team.
Dynamic and able to quickly learn new skills.
Must reside in Cross River State and be ready to spend extensive time in the field (Afi Mountain and Cross River National Park)​​

2) Partnerships Manager
Location: Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria
Responsibilities
Manage donor and stakeholder communications.
Lead and manage technical partnerships.
Manage grants, project, and report activities.
Qualification
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Zoology, Environmental Science, or related field.
Skills / Experience
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to design and manage fundraising events.
Strong project management skills, including planning, coordinating, and delivering complex initiatives on time.

3) Communications Manager
Location: Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria
Responsibilities
Develop and lead communications strategy.
Oversee and manage multimedia content across digital platforms, including website, social media, and newsletters.
Coordinate key publications, including annual reports.
Grant and proposal writing.
Qualification
At least a bachelor's degree in Communications, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline and experience in Science Communications.
Skills / Experience
Strong science communication skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Basic multimedia management and production skills.

4) Driver
Location: Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria (one position to be filled)
Responsibilities
Safely transport staff, guests, and field equipment between the office and designated locations.
Navigate routes across core project areas; knowledge of additional routes in Southern Nigeria is an advantage.
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
Maintain a clean, well-organised vehicle at all times.
Qualification
Minimum of Senior Secondary School Certificate (NECO/WAEC) or equivalent.
Valid Nigerian Driver's Licence.
Skills / Experience
Defensive driving skills and strong situational awareness.
Reliability, punctuality, and a disciplined approach to vehicle care.
First Aid certification is an advantage; willingness to undertake training is required.
Clean driving record with no serious traffic offences within the last 3 years.
