Background

​Small Mammal Conservation Organization (SMACON) is a non-governmental organization committed to the protection of small mammals and their habitat through evidence-based conservation that safeguards local livelihoods. We work with local, regional, and international partners to deploy SMACON's mission. We are looking for passionate individuals who are dedicated to the documentation and protection of biodiversity in Nigeria, the Gulf of Guinea Islands, and supporting our network of partners across West Africa.

​​General Requirements

In addition to the requirements listed for each role, each applicant should possess the following skillset for optimum productivity: email management, knowledge of basic Microsoft tools for word processing, and communication - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and similarly able to work collaboratively in Google Suites e.g. Docs, Sheets; Managing and handling/transferring large files online; familiarity with virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Google Meet).

1) Programs Officer

Location: Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria (onsite)

​

Responsibilities

• Plan, implement, and monitor all organizational programs to ensure they align with SMACON’s mission and strategic goals.

• Develop program strategies, annual work plans, and budgets, and monitor progress across all projects.

• Collaboratively work with Technical Officers to provide guidance and ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and achieve expected results.

• Build and maintain relationships with donors, government agencies, partners, and local communities to strengthen program delivery.

• Prepare high-level program reports and annual program reports.

• Assess project performance and ensure compliance with donor and organizational requirements.

• Ensure that all donor requirements on project reporting are met, and before deadlines.

• Contribute to grant writing, project design, and fundraising efforts.

• Develop and maintain a record of project reports and annual reports.

 

Qualification

At least a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, or a related field. A relevant graduate degree will be an edge.

 

Skills / Experience

Strong project planning and management skills, with the ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines.

Excellently skilled in grant writing and reporting, with proven verifiable records.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Able to apply evidence-based approaches to conservation actions.

Expected net salary:

300,000 - 400,000 NGN/month

2) Associate Director​

Location: Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria (onsite)

​

Responsibilities

• Strategic leadership and partnership

  • Support the Managing Director (MD) in driving organization-wide leadership across our programs in line with our long-term strategic plan.

  • Assist the MD in providing leadership guidelines to staff.

  • Lead cross-departmental collaboration across programs, finance and operations.

  • Be able to effectively engage with our stakeholders in the communities, government and international partners.

  • Support organizational strategic planning processes and the development of field projects.

 

• Fundraising and Financial Management

  • Lead institutional fundraising, including identifying and applying for major grants to support our programs.

  • Identify and apply for grants that align with our organizational goals.

  • Assist in building and maintaining strong relationships with donors and partners, and diversified funding sources.

  • Assist in overseeing annual operating budget across all our programs.

 

• Reporting

  • Consolidate program and annual reports ahead of Board and donor submissions

  • Ensure grant compliance across all grants, adhering to reporting guidelines and timelines.

  • Support the MD in preparing accurate program and annual reports

 

Qualifications

A graduate degree with strong research experience in biological or environmental sciences, or related fields. 

Proven record of previous technical reports and academic publications.

Prior extensive leadership experience in non-profit(s).

 

Skills / Experience

Ability to assist and lead a high-performing leadership team and build strategic donor partnerships.

Ability to drive multiple projects concurrently and  solve complex problems.

Excellently skilled in grant writing and reporting, with proven verifiable records.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Most be self motivated.

3) Managing Director

Location: Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria (onsite)

Responsibilities

• Strategic leadership and partnership

  • Ability to demonstrate organization-wide leadership across our programs in line with our long-term strategic plan.

  • Provide leadership guidelines to staff.

  • Effectively engage with our stakeholders in the communities, government and international partners.

  • Plan and maintain oversight on all ongoing field projects and their operations.

  • Oversee annual operating budget across all our programs.

  • Ensure that accurate reports and updates are made available and presented to the Board of Trustees.

  • Ensure grant compliance by adhering to reporting guidelines and timelines.

  • Lead and ensure accurate program and annual reporting.

Qualifications
