Afi Biodiversity Center.

The Afi Biodiversity Centre (ABC) is SMACON's second permanent field station, and is located at Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in Boki, Cross River State.

Fire Command Centre

A dedicated operations hub for our wildfire early-warning and prevention programme, coordinating community Forest Guardians, rangers, and climate monitoring systems across the Afi landscape.

Research & Training Hub

A base for both in-country and international students and scientists conducting fieldwork at Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. The facility will support long-term ecological research, training programmes, and skills development in the region.

It will serve as:

Conservation Programme Base

A physical anchor for SMACON's on-the-ground programmes, species monitoring, ranger patrols, and community engagement, enabling sustained, coordinated action.

Seedbank & Nursery

A base for the native species nursery driving SMACON's forest restoration work. Which involves collecting, propagating, and replanting indigenous trees to recover fire-damaged habitat.

Why field stations matter

Field stations are hubs for biodiversity science and conservation. They give scientists a base to observe wildlife, gather data, and test strategies at scale. Most significant conservation discoveries and many effective conservation models have been developed and sustained from permanent field infrastructure.

"Conservation can only succeed through cooperation and mutual trust."

— Community member, ABC groundbreaking ceremony (2025)

Construction is currently underway. The Afi Biodiversity Centre complements our second facility, the Anape Natural Science Research Station at the Obudu Plateau, which is also in progress.
